Mirissa, Sri Lanka is a small town on the south coast, located in the Matara District of the Southern Province. It is approximately 150 kilometres south of Colombo. Mirissa’s beach and nightlife make it a popular tourist destination. It is also a fishing port and one of the island’s main whale and dolphin watching locations.
Mirissa is the largest fishing port on the south coast and is known for its tuna, mullet, snapper and butterfish. In 1980 the first tourist accommodation was built however it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that tourism to the town started to dramatically increase.
Mirissa was affected by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, with numerous homes, guesthouses, shops, schools and temples destroyed or damaged and fourteen reported deaths.

Mirissa is one of the most popular beaches in the country. Consisting of a wide arrange things to do, it is a perfect holiday destination.

The most iconic and shared picture of mirissa is of its famous coconut hill. There is no traveller nor a camera that hasn’t captured this beautiful hill. Make sure to take yours.
A unique and oddly shaped rock formation making small inroads into her neighboring sea, you will get that sense of adventure topped with a nice and clear view of Mirissa beach from atop. It is along the main beach in Mirissa and is very convenient to explore.
Secret Beach is supposed to be a secret but, well, it is a popular secret now. It is a secluded beach which it very popular among tourist but still not very crowed most of the time. The sea is protected by the surrounding rocks which keeps big swells away from this section of the beach. It is a nice and quite place to relax and get lost in tranquility.
The surf at Mirissa Beach is good, but for many just starting out, it can be far too rough. Luckily, Weligama Beach is only a few kilometers away and here the waves are perfect for learning to surf.
Polhena beach is one of those places which is conveniently close to a popular destination but not overly crowded. Known for its resident turtle it is fine place to visit if you fancy swimming with there gently creatures.
There is a huge range of watersports in Mirissa , just like in Bentota beach. Surfing, ride on jet skis, being tugged on inflatable rafts while the speed boats make hairpin turn to throw you on to the water. Exhilarating and fun, these usually cost several thousand rupees per person and may include all of the above rides. It is in your best interest to negotiate a good deal.
There are a range of turtle hatcheries along the coast of Sri Lanka. There are several in between Mirissa and Galle. Koggala is one of them. Entrace is an very affordle 500 ruppees which will contribute towards the conservation effort. The farms provide protection to turtle eggs till they hatch and then release them into the sea. There are also several older and large turtles in tanks which can be viewed and interacted with.
Slit fishing is a unique way of fishing while the fisherman sits perched atop a slilt.
Dondara Lighthouse is the tallest light house in Sri Lanka.
